Unit Summary:

The Health and Wellness Department at Hamilton Health Sciences is responsible to maintain and promote health and wellness within the organization; Support the disability management process through an effective incident capture, triage and response process; Provide the supports necessary in ensuring reasonable and regular attendance at work by all staff. 

Position Summary:

The Employee Health Services Nurse will be accountable for planning, implementing and maintaining occupational health nursing standards in accordance with the College of Nurses and with Hospital policies, procedures, and Medical Directives as set out by the Occupational Health Physician. The incumbent establishes appropriate nursing procedures and provides nursing care to employees for occupational and non-occupational illness or injury. This includes rendering first aid and assessing if an employee should return to regular or modified duties and if indicated, refers employee for medical aid to either ED or FD. The Employee Health Services Nurse conducts pre-placement health assessments, including ensuring immunization status in accordance with the OHA/OMA Communicable Disease Surveillance Guidelines as required. Determines employee fitness for their job assignment in comparison with physical demands analysis of the position. Deems employee is fit, not fit or fit with restrictions. The incumbent maintains medical surveillance programs (e.g Asbestos, T.B. testing), and immunizations (i.e. Hepatitis B, Influenza) orders appropriate medical testing as per medical directives.(e.g CXR, lab testing). Reviews immunization information, including T.B testing for Volunteers and Students to ensure compliance with OHA/OMA Guidelines. The nurse assists Ability Services staff to assess the health of employees returning to work from illness or injury in relation to job requirements and/or communicable disease protocols, as well as collaborates with and support Safety Specialists as required. The incumbent provides counseling and/or referral as indicated for identified health problems. Provides limited health nutrition, physical fitness and lifestyle awareness/eduction to staff individually. Maintains an accurate, complete and confidential health record for each employee. Safeguards confidentiality of such records and allows only appropriate or consented access. Maintains an occupational health policy and procedure manual and assists in the development and review of related General Manual Policies. The nurse participates with the Occupational Health Physician in establishing written medical directives for Employee Health Services. Acts as a resource for management and employees in matters pertaining to health, interpreting and promoting an understanding of health policies, procedures and practices. Maintains accurate and complete statistical data for evaluation and future planning of Occupational Health Programs. Maintains supplies, equipment and facilities to ensure efficient nursing. Works with the Infection Prevention and Control to develop and review policies and procedures pertaining to infection control as relates to staff. Collaborates with IPC and managers to limit the spread of infections/illnesses as relates to communicable disease exposures and outbreaks. Provides post exposure follow up for blood and body fluid exposures and communicable diseases. The Employee Health Nurse will act as a role model for the mission, vision and values of the Hamilton Health Sciences, and consistently and fairly applies the principles, policies and procedures of the Employee Health Services Department. The Employee Health Services Nurse facilitates and promotes an environment, which supports creativity, innovation, excellence, continuous learning, measurement and evaluation. Qualifications:

1. Registered Nurse (RN)
2. Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
3. Ontario Occupational Health Nursing designation with a preference for Canadian Certification - C.O.H.N �
4. Minimum of 3-5 years nursing experience with expertise in occupational health and associated legislation (WSIB, OHS Act, Public Hospitals Act, and Human Rights Code).
5. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, emphasizing a focus on client-centered service
6. Demonstrated problem-solving, conflict resolution, time management and organizational skills
7. Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative, organize and establish priorities within multiple tasks
8. Work with team members to facilitate daily operations of the Employee Health Services office
9. Ability to adjust quickly to changing requirements and deal effectively with requests requiring immediate attention, including emergency situations
10. Understanding of privacy and confidentiality policies
11. Ability to work with various hospital departments effectively and collaboratively
