Nurse Practitioners - 4 Opportunities

Are you an ambitious Nurse Practitioner looking to expand your opportunities? Are you passionate about nursing care in small communities?  Then a job as a Nurse Practitioner in the NWT maybe for you!

Why the Northwest Territories?

Located above the 60th parallel, the Northwest Territories awaits with seemingly endless lakes and unmatched vistas. The opportunities available in our communities are perfect for the outdoors enthusiast looking for adventure, a healthy work/life balance, and an escape from the hustle of the big city.

All 33 NWT communities are surrounded by wilderness and water where swimming and fishing are abundant; whether it is a river, lake or the Arctic Ocean.  Our gorgeous summers serve up the glorious midnight sun and an abundance of outdoor adventures including hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing, and exploring the hundreds of easily accessible lakes and rivers. Our winters offer more outdoor adventure opportunities including snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, sledding, and pond hockey.

About the Work

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services System (HSS System) includes the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA), the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority (HRHSSA), the Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency (TCSA – Health), and the Department of Health and Social Services. Combined, these four organizations support health and social service delivery across all 33 communities of the Northwest Territories

The Nurse Practitioner provides residents of their service area with advanced health assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and follow-up care to ensure residents have access to timely, professional and sustainable health services. The focus of the Nurse Practitioner is to improve a patient’s health and ensure their care needs are met in the context of the patient’s psychosocial and physical well-being.

Located primarily within a Community Health and Social Services Facility, the Nurse Practitioner will provide comprehensive advance health assessment, make autonomous nursing and medical diagnoses, develop care plans and provide treatment to community residents.  Within the overlapping area of practice, the Nurse Practitioner will perform primary care services for acute illness and injuries and stable chronic health problems commonly encountered in primary care, including medical diagnosis, ordering and interpreting selected diagnostic tests and therapeutics.

In the community, the Nurse Practitioner is the clinical leader providing advanced nursing skills, direction and leadership within the primary community care team.
