Make a difference in the lives of Albertans by joining the Clinical Neurosciences team, at the Foothills Medical Centre, as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The Neurosurgery NP is a self-directed Advanced Practice Nurse who is educated at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. Reporting to the Manager, PCU 112, 101 and the Calgary Spine Program, the NP will provide general neurosurgical medical care to adult inpatients at the FMC.

As one of Canada’s largest hospitals, FMC provides advanced healthcare services to more than two million people from Calgary, southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia and southern Saskatchewan. The NP working with the Neurosurgery, supports neurosurgery patients at the FMC. These inpatient units provide care to patients who have are suffering from neurosurgical disorders through a collaborative multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, Clinical Nurse Educators, Nurse practitioners, Allied health professionals, and physicians. All disciplines work together to provide holistic care to the patient and their families.

Description:

As an NP, you will perform advanced, focused and/or comprehensive health assessments and interventions, as well as order, interpret and perform diagnostic tests to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans through the integration of patient information and evidence-based practice. This will be done in collaboration with the attending physician, residents, and medical students. The NP plays a key role in coordination of efficient discharge planning/disposition planning and discharge documentation for both patients and physicians. The NP is responsible for the continuous care of the patient and their family by conducting daily assessments, investigation, management, and medical documentation of assigned inpatients.

The NP has a pivotal role in ensuring daily communication with patients and families. The NP will both communicate assessment finding and/or diagnoses including outcomes and prognoses to patients/families in collaboration with the attending MD and residents and utilize complex reasoning reflective of expertise and education to safely coordinate and manage care for patients while promoting continuity across the continuum of care. The NP, along with medical trainees, is also responsible for daily communication with nursing and allied health team members, including attendance at required patient rounds.

Qualifications:

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner Program at Master’s level. Valid Nurse Practitioner in the adult stream practice permit from the College of Registered Nurse of Alberta (or eligible to be registered). Grad licensing as appropriate. Current ACLS and Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certifications. Minimum of 2 years (within the last 5) experience as an NP in a relevant acute care clinical setting OR a minimum of 5 years’ experience in Neurosciences/acute inpatients as an RN. Experience using an order entry and/or electronic patient record system.
