Thorpe Recovery Centre is a not for profit organization dedicated to providing client-centered and community-based addiction services. We are an accredited facility, providing Residential Treatment, Medically Supported Detox and a Family Program.

From our initial six clients in 1975, hailing from the Lloydminster area to the 700-plus individuals now helped annually from across Western Canada, Thorpe Recovery Centre continues to tailor each person’s treatment experience to meet their individual needs. Everyone’s history is uniquely their own – and we believe their recovery journey should be too. Each person who has walked through our doors has shaped our history and our future; for over 46 years, the development of our services has been based on the needs of our community. Located on 34 acres in the rural setting of Blackfoot, Alberta, staff are able to access a serenity garden area on the edge of its ponds that is surrounded by a 5k walking path. The facility is over 54,000 square feet has 12 medically supported detox beds and 62 inpatient addiction treatment beds where staff enjoy bright and open lunch/coffee areas and a wellness room for self time.

Nature and Scope

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, our nurses provide competent holistic care to clients of all ages. This position maintain the medical health of clients through assessment, consultation and administration of controlled, prescribes and OTC medications.  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Medication:

  •  Obtain medication history on admission and reconcile medications.
  •  Ensure controlled medications are counted, stored and ordered from pharmacy prn.
  •  Follow standing orders as per facility protocol.
  • Reporting and tracking medication issues.
  • Ensuring medication inventory is being conducted to policy.

 

Admissions/Transfers/Discharges

  • Obtain and review all medications, perform medication reconciliation.
  • Store all client medications appropriately.

 

 

ECS Drug Screens and Medicals

  • Complete drug screenings.

Client Care

  • Monitor vital signs.
  • Provide education to clients regarding health and other medical issues;
  • Book doctor appointments when appropriate, transfer paperwork to the appropriate doctor, and ensure there are follow-up appointments.
  • Communicate medical information to counsellors by email or in person.
  • Provide referrals as necessary.
  • Work closely with Medical Practitioner regarding concerns brought up by client.
  • Document client case notes, special permissions, etc.

Other Duties

  • Ensure that cupboard is stocked with medication cups, first aid, over-the-counter
  • Medications.
  • On call phone – as needed.
  • Know the whereabouts of residence and clients and ensure that they follow agency guidelines.
  • Provide active listening and validation to clients.
  • Engaging clients in the application of the recreational aspect of recovery.
  • Other assigned duties from time to time.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Diploma in Practical Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA)
  • Preference given to candidates experience preferably in the area of mental health and addictions
  • Ability to work full scope of practice.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis and/or reasoning.
  • Team players and also able to work independently.
  • Strong morals and ethics along with a commitment to staff and client confidentiality and safety.
