Reporting to the Clinical Program Director, the Professional Practice Leader is a leader, innovator, knowledge translator, and change agent who is accountable for advancing inter-professional practices, and promoting excellence in pediatric palliative care. The incumbent collaborates with a wide range of individuals and groups within and beyond the clinical team in order to plan, lead and coordinate quality improvement, knowledge and innovation initiatives that support and enhance the quality of care, service delivery and advances in pediatric palliative care across the organization.
The Professional Practice Leader is required to lead or manage complex projects and initiatives independently with little supervision. In order to accomplish assignments, they are required to have extensive knowledge of the health care system, inter-professional practice and quality improvement, and possess expertise in advanced communication, leadership, problem solving, and project management. The Professional Practice Leader advances knowledge creation and innovation by engaging in and supporting the use of current research, evidence/best practice standards, and novel ways of working in order to address professional, program and patient problems and concerns.
The position is forward focused, so the incumbent is expected to anticipate challenges and lead planning and implementation initiatives to address them in a proactive way. In order to do this, the incumbent will be expected to exercise judgment at a high level and to manage both expected and unexpected outcomes of these initiatives with skill and diplomacy.
- Take a leadership role in a wide range of projects designed to address CPCH strategic and operational goals, including quality of practice initiatives, new technology integration or innovative practice approaches. Engage in consultation with clinicians at all levels of the organization and with other disciplines to ensure that planned practices are designed to support the maintenance or enhancement of clinical care delivery.
- Leads and manages complex and innovative projects and initiatives and engages all disciplines to find solutions. Scans the environment and the literature to identify emerging practice trends and challenges and implements strategies to address challenges. Take steps to ensure that the plans and strategies are grounded in best practice standards and reflect advances in knowledge about nursing practice and patient care. Utilizes and models effective change management strategies to achieve system level transformation.
- Identifies, implements, and monitors quality improvement initiatives. Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies that support safe, competent, and ethical practice by promoting evidence-based practice.
- Provides leadership and oversight to the Practice Committee and Mediation and Safety Committee to address practice issues, identify and implement quality improvement initiatives to improve quality of care.
- Manages, coaches and leads Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Educator.
- Advise and make recommendations to the Clinical Program Director regarding trends and opportunities that will help to address clinical issues, advance professional practice, promote quality of care or maintain sustainability of the clinical workforce. Support other program leaders in the development of goals and objectives related to quality of care.
- Works with program staff to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical service outcomes and performance; prioritize quality initiatives based on program functions, needs and performance measurement system; plan, develop and implement Patient Safety and Quality Improvement education, initiatives and materials including evaluation and sustainment plans.
- Ensures CPCH quality and safety practices and processes meet regulatory requirements of licensing, accreditation standards and PHSA quality indicators. Leads program level actions to address new accreditation requirements, respond to recommendations arising from accreditation surveys, and ensures accreditation education to program staff as required.
- Identifies operating budget needs to support quality improvement initiatives and/or excellence in inter-professional practice.
- Leads retrospective (e: Root Cause Analysis) and/or prospective reviews (e.g. Failure Modes Effect Analysis) necessitated by safety events, critical incidents or process issues related to the program; monitor program staff and physician perceptions of safety, risk and quality improvement.
- Advises the Director, senior nursing and other program leaders, and other interdisciplinary care providers within and beyond the organization about issues related to pediatric palliative care to promote optimum and effective interdisciplinary teams and resource allocation.
- Collaborates with other discipline/program leaders in the development of the system wide quality improvement and risk management programs through facilitation of structures, processes and strategies to promote evidenced based practice.
- Provides systems leadership in creating, articulating, innovating and sustaining a vision for inter-professional collaborative practice that emphasizes highest quality family centered care. Supports strong inter-professional collaboration through the development of structures, processes and mechanisms that support positive patient outcomes. Tracks, analyzes and reports progress in relation to designated quality and performance indicators.
- Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of local, provincial, and national pediatric palliative care and/or professional practice initiatives through mentoring, and organizational and cross organizational task forces and committees..
- In collaboration with discipline leaders, participates in the planning, development and evaluation of discipline specific and inter-professional research proposals, projects and surveys and prioritizes according to clinical and resource availability. Shares knowledge about current research and literature including innovation in practice. Establishes opportunities to support staff in implementing evidence based practices and in clinical research endeavors. Promotes and advances best practice through publications, presentations, and conferences.
- Directs development and delivery of educational programs and other knowledge translation strategies regarding professional standards, regulation and best practice as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field
- Ten (10) years of recent related experience in a progressively senior leadership or advanced practice roles
- Eligible for registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives or relevant professional governing body
- Holds a current certification in CPR

- Knowledge and skill to operate a personal computer which includes knowledge of MS Office and Windows programs such as MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook etc.

Note: Flexibility is necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening work and travel within and outside the Lower Mainland.
