PROGRAM MANAGER OF INDIGENOUS SERVICES

Purpose of the Position:

 

B’saanibamaadsiwin is an innovator in developing new programs and services through advocacy and systemic change. This program strives to harmonize wellness and healing with western approaches to treatment. The Program Manager of Indigenous Service, B’saanibamaadsiwin, oversees the holistic operation of mental health and addictions programs in the Parry Sound and Muskoka Region.  This program is led by an empowered Indigenous Program Advisory Committee comprised of the 7 First Nations and an Urban Friendship Centre within the Region.  This leadership role supports the TRC recommendations and weaves the complex health care systems at Provincial, First Nations, and Municipal levels  The Program Manager is a leader in the organization and ensures the quality, consistency and culturally appropriate delivery of designated services that support the mission, vision, core values and principles of the Agency.  The Program Manager functions as the direct supervisor of their team leader and manager of B’saanibamaadsiwin services and program development.  This program has been established for over 30 years and has a stable health-allyship role between CMHAMPS and its Indigenous partners.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in a mental health discipline.
  • Registration with a college who grants the right to practice the protected act of psychotherapy.
  • Strong formal leadership/management skills and training/education in a health professional discipline.
  • Three years of experience in a management and supervision role and a detailed knowledge of serious mental illnesses and substance use.
  • Clinical consultation and supervision experience, including case dynamics and documentation.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal populations within the traditional territories of Muskoka and Parry Sound
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities or organizations
  • Knowledge and experience applying cultural practices within a therapeutic relationship
  • Knowledge of cultural history and health status of Aboriginal peoples in Ontario including the historical and current government practices that influence health status. This may include colonization, residential schools, treaties and land claims.
  • Identify and describe a range of traditional and non-traditional healing and wellness practices and sources of expertise including elders and healers.
  • Familiarity with the issues and strategies related to improving access to culturally appropriate wellness services.
  • Education and training in Aboriginal culture required.
  • Demonstrate appropriate approaches and strategies to reach Aboriginal peoples at an individual and/or population level. These may include knowledge of the local, provincial and national networks, groups and organizations serving Aboriginal peoples, as well as community development, ownership, reciprocity and respect in relation to health care delivery.
  • Manage internal and external relationships, possess and demonstrate empathy and compassion, to be aware of emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and the understanding of the feelings, ideas, and beliefs of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of current agency programs and functions.
  • Effective management skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivating of staff.
  • Demonstrated time management skills.
  • Tolerance of and ability to handle a heavy workload and competing demands and high risk situations.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • This position will need to work a schedule that includes days, evenings, weekends and may require some holidays and overtime, including participation in the Manager On-Call rotation.
  • Ability to use and learn new technology (computers, software programs, phones, printers/scanners, alarm/security systems etc.).
  • May be required to transport staff and/or clients of the Agency and therefore you are to hold a valid Ontario G or G2 driver’s license, have a reliable means of transportation and appropriate insurance for work purposes on your vehicle with a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with key players in each First Nations community and externally as dictated by the needs of the program
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of all designated services.  Ensure the implementation of the service goals, program and client objectives
  • Conduct regular case reviews, file audits, and provide consultation and support to staff as needed. Provide skill, training, and support to staff
  • Provide administrative and clinical supervision to the staff and students to ensure their basic knowledge and skills are current with best practice
  • Develop, review, and revise policies and procedures as necessary.  
  • Oversee recruitment, selection and orientation of staff
  • Participate in community education and community development activities as required. 

 

Salary scale:  Negotiated based qualifications and experience
