The Registered Nurse - Population and Public Health/Home Care is a key position working in partnership with a multidisciplinary team and community stakeholders.

The incumbent will: Effectively use the nursing process to deliver quality care. Provide safe, ethical and patient/family centered health care. Independently provide health assessment, health planning, health education, supportive counseling, preventative and screening measures, referrals and evaluation as appropriate. Also provides services to individuals, families, groups and communities with attention to diversity and the social determinants of health.

Duties include, but are not limited to the generalist role of public health nursing. Provision of universal Public Health services includes: Immunization for all age groups, influenza program delivery, and health promotion initiatives. Communicable Disease Control – outbreak management, notifiable disease follow up. Maternal/Infant Health including postpartum support, lactation education, prenatal education, and high risk assessment of mother, babies, and families in the home environment. Travel Health - immunization and travel health counselling. Sexual and Reproductive Health – May be required to provided STI test and treat, Women’s Wellness, contraception support, pregnancy testing and education in schools and communities. Health promotion and injury prevention.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum 2 years’ experience within the last 5 years working in a public health nursing unit performing duties supporting: Communicable Disease Control. Must possess strong assessment, communication, organizational, problem solving, and counseling skills. Must be able to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a complex dynamic environment. Effective communication skills required, oral and written. Demonstrated advanced critical thinking skills. Demonstrated decision making skills. Ability to work in a fast paced, independent and changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in nursing is preferred. Public Health nursing experience including immunization, Healthy Beginnings, and Child Health Clinic preferred. Other maternal/newborn certifications such as breastfeeding courses, lactation consultant, and childbirth education are an asset. Other recent nursing experience including: pre-natal, labor and delivery, maternal/postpartum and newborn assessment, or working with young families or pediatric population is as asset.
