Unit Summary
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a 49 bed Level III NICU, a 14 bed Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to over 1,500 neonates and their families per year and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in research and a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.
Position Summary
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)- is part of a dynamic care team that includes Neonatologists and Neonatal Fellows. This triad works seamlessly with an extended interdisciplinary team to diagnose and treat all disorders affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. In addition to direct clinical care, the NNP functions fully in the other domains of practice embedded in the role, including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. The NNP is eligible for Clinical Cross Appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University. The NNP is considered a highly respected leader and key member of the Interprofessional team at MCH. Comprised of 20 highly motivated and self-directed Nurse Practitioners, the NP will join one of the largest groups of Nurse Practitioners in any one unit in Canada. With over two decades of service, the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner team was recently recognized for their innovation and care with the Hospital’s distinguished Cornerstone of Care Award.
The department is currently looking to fill two Neonatal Nurse Practitioner positions.

Qualifications
1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class, pediatrics or primary care.
2. Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training
3. Current NRP Certification
4. Current BCLS Certification
5. Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in a neonatal ICU
6. Advanced knowledge of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology
7. Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act
8. Knowledge of family dynamics as it relates to role change with respect to the birth process crisis/stress situation and death and dying
9. Knowledge and skill to operate the highly specialized pieces of equipment in the NICU and the ability to trouble shoot and respond appropriately when problems arise
10. Critical analysis and problem-solving skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnosis
11. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Salary
$49.16 – $63.02 hourly
