Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the IWK Health Centre provides quality care to women, children, youth and families in the Maritimes and beyond. In addition to providing tertiary care, the IWK also provides primary care services and is a teaching centre affiliated with Dalhousie University. The IWK is engaged in leading-edge research; works to promote healthy lifestyles for families; and supports education opportunities for health professionals and other learners. The Health Centre employs more than 3,000 staff and over 750 volunteers.

We are seeking a Director of the Women’s and Newborn Health Program to lead the advancement of health and health care for children, youth and families of the Maritimes/Atlantic. The Director works with the Women’s and Newborn Health Senior Physicians and Physician Leaders to develop and execute strategic priorities in care, learning and research. The Women’s and Newborn Health Portfolio includes maternity services, Neonatal Intensive Care and Adult Perioperative services, (Gynaecology and Breast Health).

Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical Care & Chief Nurse Executive, the Director provides an environment for participative decision-making, fosters engagement and shared governance within inter-professional teams. The Director develops accessible approaches for physician co-leadership and provides program, organizational and system-level leadership. As an organizational leader, the Director works collaboratively to foster a learning and quality practice environment that is culturally and psychologically safe where safety, inter-professional practice and patient and family-centred care are the foundations for the delivery of high quality care, both within the health centre and across IWK community-based programs and services.

The Director, leads health services innovation by creating conditions to provide quality, safe and cost effective family/patient centred care. With a focus on sustainable health care, the Director provides leadership in the evaluation and ongoing co-design of models of care to optimize family input, scopes of practice and care delivery. The Director contributes to continuous process improvement and LEAN initiatives in health care services, including those achieved through collaboration with partners in the provincial health system. The Director addresses professional practice issues that relate to more than one profession, and ensures that professionals practice within professional standards, codes of ethics, and relevant legislation.

As our ideal candidate, you will have an undergraduate degree combined with Masters level preparation in a health related discipline, health administration or related subjects and be registered (or eligible) for full registration in a health profession in Nova Scotia. Your experience reflects a minimum of five years management experience in health care, along with seven or more years of clinical practice experience in an acute care setting. As a senior leader with IWK, you will have experience and be committed to patient and family centred care, teaching and research within an academic health care environment. You have expertise in developing and maintaining strategic partnerships and have coached, developed and led high performance teams with a strong track record of continuous improvement and measurable outcomes. Above all, you have achieved these results through collaboration and well-honed project management skills.
