Registered Nurse (On-Call/Irregularly Scheduled)
Bring your nursing expertise and knowledge of personal care to this unconventional nursing role with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services - Sarnia Jail. As a member of the nursing team, you will provide professional nursing care to male and female inmates, while also counseling staff and inmates on treatment plans.
• These are temporary positions that are irregularly scheduled as required from 0-40 hours per week
What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will use your knowledge and skills to provide patient-centered nursing care to inmates.
Specifically, you will:
• conduct health assessments for the purposes of triage and on-going care
• monitor adherence to treatment plans and response to health care interventions
• liaise with community care providers to obtain health histories and to facilitate transitional care at discharge
• participate in case management
• advocate for and encourage patient participation in the plan of care
• act as a resource for patients, staff and external stakeholders by sharing your knowledge and expertise
• work collaboratively as a member of the inter-professional team to develop, implement and evaluate patient-specific plans of care
• contribute to health program development within the institution
• establish and maintain positive working relationships with other staff members and external stakeholders
• practice in accordance with the College of Nurses Practice Standards and Ministry expectations
• practice in accordance with the security requirements of the institution
• provide emergency care, crisis intervention, health teaching, and counseling when required
How do I qualify?
• you must be registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse
Specialized Knowledge, Organizational and Time Management Skills:
• you have knowledge of nursing theories, evidence-based practices, current treatment options, community health care resources and CNO Practice Standards
• you have knowledge of, can interpret and apply relevant legislation (i.e. Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act)
• you are able to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced and complex environment
Analytical, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills:
• you are able to respond effectively in emergency or unpredictable situations and implement interventions
• you can elicit, interpret and evaluate information obtained from patients and other sources, identifying the health problems, and drawing conclusions to develop a plan of care
• you can evaluate responses to planned interventions and modify the care plan in collaboration with the inter-professional team to achieve established goals
Communication, Interpersonal and Computer Skills:
• you can interpret and clarify information about health care treatments to inmates and institution employees
• you are an effective patient advocate
• you can work collaboratively with others, such as the inter-professional team, other correctional staff and community agencies
• you advocate for and encourage patient participation in their plan of care
• you can adapt your communication skills to provide information and health teaching to a diverse population
• you can clearly communicate through verbal interaction and documentation, including progress notes, written care plans and nursing summaries
• you are proficient with various computer software applications and databases (i.e. spreadsheet, email, word processing)
Salary Range: $1,268.82 - $1,581.87 per week

You will be responsible for obtaining the criminal record check at your own expense and provide it, along with your written consent, to the Transition and Security Office (TSO), HR Service Delivery Division to evaluate the results. If applicable, the TSO, with your written consent, will request and obtain any additional screening checks as indicated in the Additional Information / Address section above that were not obtained directly by you. (Note: If a Vulnerable Sector Screening/Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service.)
